What is United Nations?

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945.  It is currently made up of 193 Member States.  The mission and work of the United Nations are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter.

Due to the powers vested in its Charter and its unique international character, the United Nations can take action on the issues confronting humanity in the 21st century, such as peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, human rights, disarmament, terrorism, humanitarian and health emergencies, gender equality, governance, food production, and more.

The UN also provides a forum for its members to express their views in the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, and other bodies and committees. By enabling dialogue between its members, and by hosting negotiations, the Organization has become a mechanism for governments to find areas of agreement and solve problems together.

The UN's Chief Administrative Officer is the Secretary-General.

About Dili Model United Nations

Dili Model United Nations was founded by two timorese students, Ross Mery Da Gloria and Ariel Mota Alves in 2014, as the first ever Model UN conference in Timor-Leste organized by young people. Upon returning from an Exchange Program from Bali organized by UNESCO, Ross, who is a current International Relations student at the UNTL, was determined that she wanted to do something new for her community. Ariel learned about Model United Nations while he was studying at the UWC Adriatic, Italy. After gave some thoughts through a random conversation, Dili Model United Nations was invented, with the aim to encourage civic engagement of young people, and to promote further understanding of the working of the United Nations Organization by allowing young students to experience the diplomacy and negotiations in Model United Nations simulations. This year will be the third chapter of DMUN.

The video below tells you about the concept of Model UN, with rules and procedures

Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an educational simulation and/or academic competition in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. MUN involves and teaches researching, public speaking, debating, and writing skills, in addition to critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities.

Participants in Model UN conferences, known as delegates, are placed in committees and assigned countries, or occasionally other organizations or political figures, where they represent members of that body. They are presented with their assignments in advance, along with a topic or topics that their committee will discuss. Delegates conduct research before conferences and formulate positions that they will then debate with their fellow delegates in the committee, staying true to the actual position of the member they represent.

Necessary MUN training session will be held and study guide will be providing for students who passed into selection process. In short, it is like debate, but in a formal way.
