DMUN 2015

What we did last year?

From the 17th until the 19th of July 2015, Timor-Leste Youth for Peace (TLYfP) and Timorese students from United World Colleges (UWC) brought to Dili the first ever Model United Nations conference to the country. An educational activity that simulates the United Nations conference and generously supported by the United States embassy in Dili gathered together 78 young, talented Timorese who have high interest in Global issues, selected after filling an application form by the organizing team.

Selected students were then introduced to the Model UN procedures through three training sessions by UWC students who study abroad and have experienced in Model UN conferences. Students were divided by five different committees of the United Nations and they discussed issues that the world are currently concern on in a general theme “Creating a sustainable peaceful society, through alliance of civilizations and international cooperation in sectors of security, justice and equality.” The opening speeches were inspiringly delivered by the Timor-Leste’s Nobel Peace Prize Ramos Horta, the UN resident coordinator Knut Osby and the main sponsor, the U.S. Embassy. The conference closed with a General Assembly on “Millennium Development Goals” following by distributions of awards and the certificates.

Participants were from Universities in Dili: UNTL, UNDIL, UNITAL, UNPAZ, English Access students from LELI and high school students. The conference was in English language and dress code follows western formal attire.
